Rich’s Take: Navy Wisdom on 'Navigating by the Stars'
In the Navy, we have the best GPS systems in the world. We have satellites that can pinpoint a ship's position down to the inch. But you know what every bridge watchstander still learns? Celestial Navigation.
There is a specific kind of silence that happens on the bridge of a ship at 3 AM in the middle of the Pacific. When the electronics flicker: and they always do eventually: you don’t panic. You grab a sextant. You look at the stars. You find Polaris.
TRUST THE TECH, BUT VERIFY THE HORIZON.
Most people in e-commerce and asset management today are flying blind. They’ve plugged their entire business into a "black box" of AI and automation. They see the numbers going up, so they think they’re on course. But they don't know why the numbers are going up, and they don’t know how to steer if the algorithm changes or the API breaks.
The Lesson: Automation is your GPS. Your core business principles (the "stars") are your charts.
- The GPS: Your AI-driven ad spend, your automated email flows, your agentic customer service.
- The Stars: Your brand voice, your actual relationship with your customers, and your ability to do the work manually if the power goes out.

Automation Tip: Agentic Oversight: Managing Your AI 'Chiefs'
We’ve moved past simple "if-this-then-that" automation. We are now in the era of Agentic Teams.
An "Agent" isn't just a script. It’s a specialized AI entity that can make decisions based on a goal. At the studio, I don’t just have "tasks"; I have "Chiefs."
- I have a Design Chief (AI) that monitors trends and drafts concepts.
- I have a Ops Chief (AI) that manages my inventory and logistics.
But here is where most people fail: they treat AI like a magic wand instead of a subordinate.
How to manage your AI 'Chiefs' effectively:
- Define the Commander’s Intent: Don’t tell an agent "Write a blog post." Tell it: "Write a blog post that explains the value of veteran-owned businesses to a Gen Z audience, using a tone that is 70% professional and 30% street-smart."
- The Oversight Loop: You wouldn’t let a new recruit run the engine room without checking the gauges. You need a human-in-the-loop (HITL) system.
- Agentic Conflict: Sometimes I set two agents against each other. One creates, one critiques. This "adversarial" setup ensures the output isn't just "good for an AI," but actually good.
STOP BUILDING WORKFLOWS. START BUILDING DEPARTMENTS.
